Does loud noise drive you up the wall?

Ocean Noise

Most of us have suffered from noise pollution at some point of our lives - from drills digging up roads to neighbours playing their music at full volume to children screaming. Annoying though that can be, it is rarely 24/7/365 and we can usually take steps to reduce it. Those who can't tend to get very stressed.

Imagine how stressful it would be to have to endure noise 24/7/365 in an environment where visibility was often so poor that you had to rely on sound to communicate and to navigate and to work out what was going on around you. That is what our ships, submarines and seismic testing for fossil fuels are doing to the inhabitants of our oceans.

Sea creatures may be deafened by the noise, lose contact with each other (which would be disastrous for a young calf and its mother), and not be able to hear attackers approaching or to detect their food using sound. Pods may be spilt up as they scatter and flee from the noise. Some may strand themselves.

It's getting worse, and little is being done about it.

Oceans Getting Louder; Effects Unclear

The amount of noise in the world's oceans, mostly from commercial shipping, is rising. The North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans are the busiest and the noisiest. The noise, including that created by the military, is believed to cause whale beachings and other harm to wildlife, which often relies on sound to "see" as well as communicate. Research on the topic is patchy, and much more needs to be done before any action is likely to be taken, due to cost. This may be too late for some creatures
